Meet The Team

Clive Tan Che Koon

Co-founder and Executive Director of 8I Holdings Limited (ASX:8IH), Clive spearheads the VI Fund Management team.

Clive holds a Post-Graduate Diploma in Education from the National Institute of Education and an Honours Degree in Mechanical and Production Engineering from the Nanyang Technological University. He also attended the University of Technology in Sydney on an academic exchange programme.

From his humble beginnings as a secondary school teacher, Clive was introduced to the idea of value investing through an investment workshop and soon after, he began modelling his investment strategies from renowned value investors, including Warren Buffett, and adapting it to the Asian context.

Through prudent investments and careful planning, Clive had accumulated enough investment returns within 5 years to start his first business venture with his wife, acquiring an existing loss-making childcare business and turning it into a successful and profitable one before selling it for a good profit.

Passionate about sharing his investment knowledge and the importance of financial literacy with the public, Clive has authored books, including Value Investing for Employees – one of the best-selling titles in VI’s Value Investing series.

Clive, since the 8I Group’s inception in 2008, has been responsible for the strategic planning, development, and risk management of the Group’s business units, including financial education and investments in listed securities. He is also deeply involved in the development of corporate policies and the group’s Human Capital.

Richard Sim Zhipeng

Richard graduated from Nanyang Technological University with a Bachelor in Accountancy and was previously with Ernst and Young Singapore as a Senior Auditor. He is both a Chartered Financial Analyst® (CFA) and a Chartered Accountant (CA).

He joined VI Fund Management in 2013 as an analyst to hone his investment skills and build up the company’s portfolio with great companies similar to those of Berkshire Hathaway. At the age of 27, Richard already handled a portfolio of around 15 companies, generating double-digit returns from investing in various equities throughout the Asia Pacific.

Being a lifelong learner in the art and science of value investing, Richard constantly seeks to grow in his capacity to add massive value to society through financial education. To date, he has spoken at various finance- and investment-related programmes and events, including the Value Investing Summit 2017.

Joyce Pang Qin

A strong advocate for deep, fundamental research, Joyce is responsible for researching and conducting detailed analyses for growth companies in Greater China (Mainland China, Hong Kong, and Taiwan).

Before joining VI Fund Management, she worked with reputable MNCs, such as Daikin and Siemens, as an engineer specialising in building technologies and system automation, energy management, applying critical thinking for solving problems, and proposing best solutions for clients based on data intelligence.

Passionate about investing, she applies the same critical thinking into research and discussions with the team.

Joyce graduated from the University College Dublin with a Master's Degree in Science of Management (2nd Upper Honours) and has a Bachelors in Mechanical Engineering from Shanghai Ocean University.

Jinliang Tho

A global investor with over five years of experience, Jinliang brings his ever-learning attitude into discovering fundamentally strong growth companies for VI Fund.

He is responsible for conducting fundamental research on global equities and .providing investment recommendations for VI Fund. He is also responsible for VI Fund Management’s branding and marketing on both digital and offline platforms and contributes significantly to VI Fund Management’s publications. Prior to joining VI Fund Management, Jinliang was part of the Branding and Communications Team for 8I Holdings.

Jinliang graduated from the University of Adelaide with a Bachelor in Commerce (International Business).

Joshua Zhang Yaolin

With over eight years of experience as a global investor, Joshua is on a quest to automate and simplify the complex world of investing and portfolio management.

Always seeking to discover and learn from founder-led businesses, he is obsessed with discovering financial and non-financial factors that can foretell company performance ahead of share price movements.

This includes uncovering factors that hint at companies outperforming the market and forensic accounting factors to detect and avoid companies with aggressive accounting practices.

Passionate about applied statistical machine learning in the capital markets, he manages the “VI Quant” series of funds at VI Fund Management and leads a team responsible for the in-depth research and backtesting of quantamental investment strategies.

Joshua also leads the R&D of financial modules within VI App, implementing many of his investing research as key features to systemise the investing process and empower retail investors to make decisions smarter, faster, and easier.

Yidan Lu

With a solid background in computer science and a passion for the capital markets, Yidan is a key member responsible for the seemingly impossible task of unearthing the “holy grail” of all investment strategies – maximum possible upside without drawdowns.

She spends countless hours and sleepless nights on data cleaning, quantitative research, and strategy backtesting for the VI Quant series of funds.

After graduating with honours from Singapore University of Technology and Design with a Bachelor of Engineering (Information Systems Technology), she passed the CFA level 2 exam at the tender age of 22 and is currently undertaking her Master in Quantitative Finance at the Singapore Management University.
